The Europe Theatre Prize was established in 1986 as a pilot project of the European Commission, under support for its creation, provided at that time by Melina Mercouri, patroness of the prize events, and by Jack Lang, then French Minister of Culture and current President of the Prize. Since 2002, the Europe Theatre Prize has been recognized by the European Parliament and Council as an “European cultural interest organization”. In 2017 it was also designated as the project that will open the European Cultural Heritage Year in 2018.
