The last play written by Giraudoux was one of his most political, as it calls into question the nature of money by presenting greedy speculators. Against these “lads,” a woman from another era organizes a sort of citizens’ resistance. This aspect of the play was poorly received at the time of its first production. It has appeared more distinctly over the course of its various productions. Over time, La Folle de Chaillot, with its critique of oil, waste, and the damage caused by progress, has become a play with an environmental message.
